Entertainment WeeklyKen Tucker
The show remains lightweight and occasionally just silly, but it’s also a comedy that's truly tense, a drama with a mythology that rarely gets bogged down.

Because the comedy is so strong, the cast is so likable, and everyone involved so obviously has a passion for making the show as entertaining as it can be, there's a sense of joy around "Chuck" that's infectious.

The five episodes NBC sent out don't, to my eye, reach the heights Chuck hit toward the end of its season 2 run. But after a major change in the show's premise--rather than being a sad sack nerd dragged into the spy-life, Chuck is now a certified ass-kicker, thanks to getting some superpowered brainwaves--the show successfully changes gears while keeping everything that's best about it.

Chuck is a terrifically appealing, super-slick mix of comedy, action and (often thwarted) romance.

I watched the five new episodes NBC sent and couldn't wait to see more.

Despite some tweaking in the main storyline, Chuck's tone remains generally affable.

Though each episode is entertaining, it's difficult to care what happens because nothing much seems to be at stake. Still, amid all the shattered and haunted leading men on TV today, Chuck is a refreshingly simple guy.

Plot contrivances aside, the new season of Chuck gets off to a decent start as friendships rekindle (Chuck and best friend Morgan become roommates) and new parties get involved in subterfuge.

Got to kick it up a notch, Chuck. [18 Jan 2010, p.41]

I worry about Chuck. I see it moldering before my eyes. And it’s nobody’s fault

There's still a lot to like about Chuck, starting with the characters themselves....The romantic part is not, however, the only excess creeping in. Flashbacks, fantasies and slo-mo scenes seem increasingly prominent and that's not good, because they're much more effective--and funnier--if they're used sparingly.

The whole Chuck-Sarah relationship has been played from so many angles as to have grown a bit tedious--how many longing looks can two characters exchange?--and the actual capers are generally pretty slim. Despite a semi-serialized riff involving a shadowy organization, the stakes never feel particularly steep.

The show’s formula--particularly the ease in which the villains track down Chuck--is getting creaky.

Douglas T. gave it a10:
This is one of my favorite shows of all time. Why? Because its a consistently fun, lighthearted, silly, action adventure romp that always puts me in a good mood. In other words, its exactly what I want from a good TV show.
Maddog J. gave it a9:
I don't know what happened in the off season, but it seems as though the writing team listened to the critics and molded a new show with this awesome cast putting up a stronger performance every week.
Avinash S. gave it a10:
This new season is lot more interesting than the previous seasons. Its a perfect balance of comedy, action and romance. this new season will be a real treat to watch.
Ben L gave it a10:
As excellent as ever. The slightly repeating storyline throughout the episodes may bore some, but an underlying progression of plot made by excellent acting and creativity on the director's part keeps the show exciting and a joy to watch.
K R gave it a10:
This season is a little bit of the same awesomeness we've come to expect. The fun balance of spy stuff with the nerdherd world is just the right tone to escape from real life and have a few laughs. The only spy comedy out there worth watching, and this season with Chuck not being so anemic in the skills department has been a fun addition.
C J gave it a10:
Chuck contains a little for everyone, and the third season is no different. It is taking a new path this season, but is still a nice combination of physical comedy, clever writing, action, suspense and romance. IIt's difficult not to like something here. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed!
Jason S gave it a10:
I'm sure there are more sophisticated shows on television. But in terms off pure enjoyment, wit, laughs, consistency and overall joy, "Chuck" exceeds all others. Thank you, NBC, for giving the show another chance. We are all grateful.
