Summary
Designed for the legions of Dynasty Warriors fans, DYNASTY WARRIORS 6: Empires is game that brings together the best aspects of the action and strategy genres. In this latest edition, players can experience Ancient China’s greatest and most glorious war as an all-powerful lord or as an officer. As a lord, gamers must think strategically. By deciding when to attack, when to resist invasion, or when to initiate policies, a lord can expand their power and influence. An easy-to-learn card collecting system lets players enact policies that will increase their empire’s strength, improve the abilities of their forces, and more. The cards that a player receives will depend on the attributes of the officers and their army. Players can also pledge their allegiance to a kingdom to become an officer. As an officer, players can suggest policies in the kingdom’s war council, complete missions for rewards, or even turn against their ruler should relations sour. Most eagerly awaited by fans is a game mode that allows players to create their own warrior. DYNASTY WARRIORS 6: Empires features an extensive character editing system with options to customize a warrior’s gender, build, skin tone, facial features, voice, clothing, weapon and more. Whomever players choose to be, they can now use mountain ledges and waterways to infiltrate enemy bases and launch surprise attacks on supply depots to change the flow of battle. [Koei]

Endless variations on battles and the ability to customize characters make this game a good value for serious fans. People looking for less involvement and hack-and-slash may want to rent or avoid this title altogether.

If there was a series that could really use a reboot, reinvention or a break Dynasty Warriors should be it. The series has been doing the same thing over and over again for so long and it’s not doing enough to entice new players to the series.

This isn't the first Empires game to release for Dynasty Warriors but it is one of the most refined. Ultimately, you get some Dynasty Warriors action inside a Romance of Three Kingdoms game.

If romancing the three kingdoms is your thing, you're going to go bananas for this already-established RTS twist on the DW franchise. Otherwise, it's totally niche, so approach with caution. [July 2009, p.81]

It may be fun, but no amount of political (and entertaining) backstabbing can hide the fact that, at the end of the day, this is still Dynasty Warriors 6 with a slight incentive to keep hacking and slashing.

Unfortunately, for everything that Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires does right, it does several things to remind you that this is the exact same game as DW2, way back in 2000; from the combat to the graphical design and quality, the series has been treading water for years.

This is by far the most in depth game of all the warrior games. Dynasty warriors 6 was decent enough for change, but the depth of customization was not present enough to make the gamer care. This game however has create a character, unlockables, and a much better weapon and character upgrade system which allows the gamer to push further to grab everything possible to create a powerhouse character. The absence of multiple weapon upgrades and a secret 4th level weapon like dynasty warriors 3-5 had is a bit disappointing, but one forgives this through all the possible customization options. Another plus is the Officer Mode of playing. The missions are quick, yet can be challenging and provide balanced rewards. The two qualities which could have been improved are the cloned movesets being given unique movesets instead, and the presence of several different weapons to upgrade to. The generic movesets given to half of the characters that are repeated for several other characters gets rid of variety, and is easily rather tedious to use. And for players who like collecting new shiny and often overthetop looking weapons, the absence of such collection is a big disappointment for such players. With the vast other customization options and nice reevaluation of Dynasty Warriors 6's renbu system though, the game is easily the highest quality and most reolayable out of the Warriors games. Even haters of the series may be able to find some amusement in this game.

Beautiful visuals, perfect combat system and an edit mode thats like recycling. (The possibilities are endless!) Then I come to Empire mode, AMAZING!!! Ruler and officer are so different, officer mode is more interesting to play but being ruler in charge of everything is brilliant fun. Ten out of ten. End of story. Goodbye.

DW6E is a very satisfying addition to the "Empires" series. The focus on 6E is split into two modes - as an Officer, complete missions to earn favour and renown. As a Ruler, recruit Officers and beat the living hell out of everyone. Refinements to the game, such as how Bases work and the bonuses they grant, are most satisfying. The bodycount is also through the roof - on 5 Empires I averaged around 300 kills a level, and now I average 1200+! Whilst being the "Ruler" is the path the game seems to push, Officer Mode offers a nice change of pace that should not be overlooked, and is more than welcome.

I am a die-hard DW fan and was so disappointed by DW 6 that I had to sell it. For me this game has completely brought the series back with not only adding the brilliantly deep and open-ended strategy side of the "Tactics" game, but having great in-battle gameplay and much more complex and interesting battle maps. My only criticism would be that the game - to my knowledge - hasn't incorporated any of the classic DW battles such as the Yellow Turban Rebellion, and Hu Lao Gate.

I have every PS3 game released by KOEI and so far this is my favorite. They've done a great job and I'm pretty sure I"ll be playing this long after I get the platinum. The draw distance during split-screen play has been improved A LOT compared with DW6, which has quickly put this at the top of my list for local co-op (of 70+ retail and 60+ psn games). Having well over a hundred music tracks to choose from and being able to browse them while the level loads is great too. By the time you pick the one you like there's almost no time spent waiting. I'm not including in my rating stuff I wanted to be added to DW6, I feel for what it's trying to do.. I'm giving this an 8. I'd rate it higher except you dont have to break gates open anymore, you don't unlock characters (they're all available) and your characters don't persist (you can't collect/level all of them without seperate savegames). Oh yeah, and you'll probably want to play on Hard or more difficulty - Normal is just too easy. Overall, a GREAT game for the price point, not to be missed unless you're one of those people who always play on Easy and think it's just button mashing *rolls eyes*.

Let's face it... Installment 6 is a return to the roots of the game in an effort to win over a new generation of fans. It's simplified, it's dumbed down, and very easy to approach for the first time player. Seasoned fans might as well go back and play DW5:Empires, as that is a far superior game in longevity, strategy, and much more engaging. This one is easier than Risk where DW5:E was more like Axis and Allies on a strategy level. For what it is, it does very well. So instead of rating it for what I wanted it to be, I will rate it on how well it does what it sets out to do, which is provide a slimmer, easier strategy element to the Empires series to capture new fans. Otherwise I would rate this game a 5 on letting long term fans down in a big way (Just like I felt they did on DW6).
