Summary
Set in the shattered subway of a post apocalyptic Moscow, Metro 2033 is a story of intensive underground survival where the fate of mankind rests in your hands. In 2013 the world was devastated by an apocalyptic event, annihilating almost all mankind and turning the earth’s surface into a poisonous wasteland. A handful of survivors took refuge in the depths of the Moscow underground, and human civilization entered a new Dark Age. The year is 2033. An entire generation has been born and raised underground, and their besieged Metro Station-Cities struggle for survival, with each other, and the mutant horrors that await outside. You are Artyom, born in the last days before the fire, but raised Underground. Having never ventured beyond your Metro Station-City limits, one fateful event sparks a desperate mission to the heart of the Metro system, to warn the remnants of mankind of a terrible impending threat. Your journey takes you from the forgotten catacombs beneath the subway to the desolate wastelands above, where your actions will determine the fate of mankind. [THQ]

Regardless of how the story ends the experience itself is worth the price of admission.

Metro 2033 has a good deal to offer the player. It has a great story and atmosphere and a reason to play it multiple times.

4A Games leaves you no choice but to engage with the gameplay of Metro 2033 because of its dark tone and great story. Hardcore gamers looking for a unique experience in PC ultimately will be rewarded by this atmospheric and fast-paced shooter.

Despite those nitpicks and a couple frustrating late-game sections, Metro 2033’s greatest success is the consistency of its pacing. You’re constantly encountering new factions, discovering interesting new locations, or being tasked to do something you haven’t done before.

Metro 2033 is a well-scripted shooter in a highly atmospheric post apocalyptic world. Well done, THQ!

Metro 2033 is Stalker done right. Gone are the half-working sandbox elements and infuriatingly underpowered weapons. Instead Metro delivers an expertly paced train ride though the spooky post-apocalyptic underbelly of Moscow. The English voiceovers are horrible, but in the end that doesn't really matter. Great game. [May 2010]

In Metro 2033 you will experience high-end graphics and a story that is a little short, but full of shocking moments. Since I played this game I take my flashlight with me when I am traveling around with the tube… you never know what will happen.

Metro 2033 is like the eastern European Half-Life – a must for fans of post-apocalyptic settings, narrative shooters, survival horror, or any combination thereof.

But if you’re looking for a narrative driven experience that is going to shock, scare, perplex and amaze you, then Metro 2033 might just be your next stop on the line.

In spite of its linearity and scarce longevity, METRO 2033 captures the player thanks to its strong, dark atmosphere and a gameplay that wisely mixes FPS and Action elements. Graphically surprising (especially the PC version), it’ll keep you playing for hours on end… like a good book.

The game has one big problem: the shooting doesn't work as it should. And that's bad because Metro 2033 has a wonderful atmosphere, a really good plot and its gameplay is very physical.

Despite lacking a multiplayer-component, which is a pity indeed, we can only recommend this title to just about every shooter fan, who is in search for good stories... and great graphics, even though your gaming-rig should better be brandnew and contain top-notch components, if you intend to put those quality-settings anywhere above "medium". Otherwise, Metro2033s engine will probably eat your GPU for breakfast.

The atmosphere is perfect for anyone who loved Fallout 3 and although the combat takes some getting used to and could be frustrating for some, Metro 2033 is an exciting adventure that will keep you hooked until the end.

Atmospheric and original story that keeps switching gears between fast-paced FPS action, sneaking and pure horror. Completely linear and has a tendency to be brutally unfair, leading to some frustrating deaths. Still, definitely worth checking out.

Metro 2033 has a lot going for it, but it has a cruel streak that I both dread and admire. It kept me playing to find out what happened next, but it was always a tug-of-war between my curiosity about the plot and my desire to keep getting brutalized by unforgiving game design.

Metro 2033 is game that lets players traverse a wonderful post-apocalyptic world in an interesting way. The small changes of pacing ensure that the game never bores. Even though the game is relatively linear and the story slightly disappoints on some levels, Metro 2033 is probably one of the best games ever to come out of Eastern Europe.

Metro 2033 is a classic FPS with some new features that distinguish it from its competitors, as the ammunition to be used as a currency and the importance given to the gas mask. Gameplay is generally funny, despite sometimes a little bit too scripted. Thumbs up for the AI of the enemies, quite realistic. Graphics on PC are simply astounding, while on Xbox 360 the final result is not as good as we would have expected.

Metro 2033 may not be the most innovative survival shooter to ever have graced the genre, but that doesn’t mean it should be dismissed in the blink of an eye. The game serves up an unforgiving world with gameplay that at times matches it perfectly.

I don't give 10's in metacritic, as a matter of real fact I cannot remember the last time I gave a 10. This is by far, the best single player experience I've had in many years, if not the best ever. The environment, the graphics, the characters and the voice-acting.... oh man. Would you believe it that I replayed the game not for the alternate ending, but to go back and revisit the characters again? Fuck, the immersion in this is a work of art. For you who are reading this and considering downloading it on bittorrent, don't. Just go BUY a copy from the store. There are almost close to no developers dedicated to making exclusive-quality content for the PC anymore. TO THE PEOPLE AT A4 FROM UKRAINE, I will get Metro 2034 when you develop it and I hope you do, but please don't use proprietary technology like PhysX, it hurts the experience for non-nvidia users. Thank you for this game!
Brumbek gave it a10:
This to me is the perfect game. Why? Because every aspect of it is top-notch, is presented with perfect pacing, and leaves you with nothing but very strong positive memories. It draws you in and doesn’t let you go, and it never gets old. It’s such an immersive and memorable experience. I found myself paying close attention to every scene and all the amazing details. It sounds cliché, but it really is one of if not the most immersive games I’ve ever played. Many games have great elements to them but few are presented in such an excellent manner. Every level, conversation, and cut-scene flow so well that you never get bored and nothing ever gets stale. Level after level the game provides new visuals, new enemies, new weapons, new mysteries, and new twists. Some people have complained about the gun mechanics, but I personally found them to be very solid and satisfying. Some have complained about the difficulty. Well, I beat the game on hardcore without much challenge, but there’s an easy option for the less FPS-inclined. The only downside is the story really isn’t developed like it could have been. The story only starts to get interesting and then the game ends. Being based on the actual novel of the same name, the game feels more like just the prologue than an actually developed story. But even so, it’s a very excellent prologue! Plus the secret ending is a little too ‘secret’ and unexplained I think. Anyway, here’s hoping for a sequel that explains more of what is going on. Anyway, I give this game a 10 because I loved it so much I played through it twice in a row and I only have completely positive memories. It’s the type of game you can go back and play again every so often because it’s such a joy. It’s already a classic and a testament to the power of good game design.
Tristan H gave it a9:
I really enjoyed the combination of the STALKER-like post-apocalyptic atmosphere combined with the Half-Life 2 tradition of good pacing, fun set pieces and relatively linear yet still enjoyable level design. Admittedly I'm not a fan of multi-player shooters and this is one of the best single player FPS experiences to come out lately. For what it's worth the game played and looked fine fine at 720p resolution on my dusty old Radeon Athlon X2 5000+ / 3870 combo.
Rob M gave it a9:
After fixing some technical issues (such as a bugged laser sight) and sitting down to seriously play Metro 2033, all I can say was that I was utterly blown away. If you can get past some serious bugs (that are easy to fix mind) I'm confident Metro will impress. This is what FPS games should be -a totally unique brilliantly paced (I never found a section or gimmick over stayed its welcome) FPS With plenty of diversity in action and locales combined with solid, well crafted FPS action. Metro has been made in the tradition of classics like STALKER, Half Life and System Shock - metro is definately a must for any fan of atmospheric, absorbing shooters.
Martin S gave it an8:
While the game was fun, it had the potential to be even greater. What I expected was a game similar to the STALKER series: open ended, huge, and a sandbox. The first time i played it, i was sorely disappointed, and ended up shelving the game almost immediately. Upon later revision, I replayed it and found the experience far more enjoyable. Cant wait for any DLC; hopefully there will be some free roam added (hint hint).
frank s. gave it a9:
game is something you havent seen. not many games will do what this game has done. most guns are made up by them and not taken from wars. the gamplay is incredibly short for a game without a MP. while in loading screens ull see the whole metro and the spots u already visited and a majority of the metro is unvisited at the end. in the game its u fighting other humans or fighting mutuants never mixed. even though i rather fight other humans than the mutants because they are fast and glitch through you and attack from behind. AI squad mates are sometimes incredibly stupid and dont attack sometimes. overall this game keeps u guessing and u need to use the tools the game has given you. final thing there is no exploration and once u leave a station u never go back no matter what. PS: ending didnt make much sense.
Vet gave it a5:
Metro 2033 could have been a decent game, but it's preposterous toll on your PC and rage-inducing random difficulty spikes body slam it down into the realm of the irredeemable. I'd like to say it's a shame and that it could have been something truly unique, but the atmosphere and setting the game tries so hard to achieve already came in the form of the STALKER games (the latest of which, Call of Pripyat, arrived a month before Metro, and at half the price on Steam). Unless you just bought a pair of ATI 5970's or GTX 480's and are dying to see a game in DirectX11, don't spend your money on Metro until it hits the bargain bin.
