Summary

Eufloria is an ambient game of space exploration and conquest that employs surprising themes of plant growth and bio mechanical evolution. The game allows the player to explore a beautifully realized universe rendered in a style that is both unique and compelling. Eufloria's aesthetics are reminiscent of children's books like "the little prince" and the gameplay is supported by an original ambient soundtrack by Brian Grainger. Gameplay revolves around conquering asteroids in space and using their resources to literally grow and nurture new semi-organic plants and creatures to do the player's bidding. The player is pitched again several teams of AI opponents that all vie for the same resources and can offer fierce opposition. [Steam]

PC Gamer UK

An elegant and beautifully depicted strategy game that feels logical but fresh. Even if it is a little late to bloom. [Christmas 2009, p.110]

games(TM)

Eufloria is significantly more expensive than many games of this type, but it will eat into your life more efficiently than most of them. [Christmas 2009, p.114]

PC PowerPlay

An easy-to-play casual RTS. Starts a bit slow but the stylised graphics and immersive sound keep you hooked. [Jan 2010, p.81]

LEVEL (Czech Republic)

Inventive “green” strategy game with procedural generated graphics helps all those who need relieve of stress and relax. [Issue#187]

Multiplayer.it

Even if the game is charming and fascinating, talking about the gameplay Eufloria isn't able to appeal the player and, worst, to challenge him.

Pleasant enough, but it feels like little more than a glorified iPhone game. [Christmas 2009, p.95]

Eurogamer

It's a beautiful, thoughtful curiosity. But somewhere in getting at the essence of strategy gaming, Eufloria has become a sketch, a distraction, a showcase, and a toy: it's an experience that you'll enjoy, rather than a coherent and satisfying game.

Destructoid

Eufloria is tough, but not impossible, to love. You may have to fight through (or altogether ignore) the campaign mode to get to the good stuff, and even then you may spend more time waiting and micromanaging than you'd like, but I can't possibly deny the strength of Eufloria's most basic design choices.

Casey D. gave it a5:
This is definitely a late-night game to play while watching a movie. It takes little to no concentration to play it (and therefore will receive little to no concentration from the player). If you decide you want to just sit back, chill, and let your brain melt, then this is a game for you.

Kyle C gave it a3:
Eufloria is a pleasant looking game with a very nice soundtrack. If that's all you're looking for then you'll be very happy with your purchase. But as a strategy game it's very lacking. The game plays like this: You grow a tree. The tree releases seeds that you then send to neighboring asteroids to defeat any enemy seeds and trees that may be there. After you defeat the enemies, you can sacrifice a few of your seeds to plant a new tree or two, which then grows you more seeds to use to conquer the next asteroid. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. There are some basic strategy elements such as selecting the proper offensive unit type (high strength, speed, or energy) for the enemy that you're fighting as well as the ability to plant defensive trees but that's about it. And to make matters worse, you'll often find yourself in need of high strength seeds with only one tree growing them, forcing you to wait around for about an hour until you have sufficient seeds to use. Another glaring omission in this game is the inability to remove trees you've already planted in order to grow a new type of tree. I can only guess that in a game with such a "green friendly" premise, pulling out the old chainsaw would have been considered poor taste. If this game was priced at $5 or less, those flaws could be overlooked. At it's core, Eufloria is beautifully rendered and has excellent ambiance. It's a very relaxing game which is always a nice change of pace. But at its current $20 price tag I find it to be severely lacking in both form and depth and can't recommend that anyone waste their money on it. Pretty colors and music does not make a game enjoyable. Too bad that the developers didn't understand that, or else this game might have been great.

Jakub Ż gave it a9:
Eufloria redefines the meaning of low-price game with it's beautiful graphics and addictive, long story mode.

Dan A gave it a10:
Really awesome game. Art style is awesome and it's a simple and fun game to just pick up and play.

Casey M gave it an8:
Great game if you ask me, I don't see why so many critics didn't like it.

Jack K gave it a7:
This is a decent game for me. While the start got me sucked in with the thought of quick-paced action in a very strategic way. I was however disappointed as it turned into a 30 second rush to get as many unclaimed rocks, then a 10 minute wait to build up a ludicrous force, then 2 minutes for a nice steamrolling. If you want a good game though, Phage Wars on Armor games will get you the same basics, along with a much faster paced level set. TL;DR VERSION: Decent game, but I have seen flash games with the same or better capabilities.
