Summary
Developed at Rebellion by the team responsible for the original 1999 PC classic, the all-new Aliens vs. Predator allows players to take the role of three infamous species: Colonial Marines, Predators and Aliens. The game features a unique three-way online multiplayer experience, allowing gamers to battle for survival and the right to be crowned the deadliest species in the galaxy. Each race also has its own distinct action-packed single-player campaign mode, with a storyline that cleverly interweaves with the other two species’ paths. Set on planet BG-386; a human colonist mining group discovers an ancient pyramid containing a dark and horrible secret. Across the galaxy, a race of warriors is alerted to the discovery of their pyramid and a hunting party is dispatched to ensure that it remains sealed at all costs. Deep inside the ruined pyramid meanwhile, nature's deadliest species awakes from centuries of hibernation intent on finding new prey. The Colonial Marine's story is an incredible fight against all odds from horrors lurking in the dark. Surrounded on all sides yet armed to the teeth, the Colonial Marine represents humanity's last stand with the firepower to fight back. As the Alien, players discover what it's like to be the scariest, most murderous creature in the universe, with the ability to traverse any surface at lightning speed in order to get close enough to unleash its deadly claws, tail and teeth. A master of the hunt, the Predator grants the player an arsenal of exotic weaponry with which to stalk from the shadows. Earn the greatest honor by ambushing prey up-close, before butchering them for a gory trophy kill. [Sega]

Over all Aliens Vs Predator has succeeded in bringing to the table so much newness with an old concept. It just does not get old anytime soon in it's playability.

I really enjoyed playing the Predator and the Aliens campaign, because I haven’t experienced that kind of gameplay in any other game yet. Everybody who likes a mix of horror and action should play Aliens vs Predator.

Given the garbage most fans have had to go through in recent years, including one luke-warm Aliens vs Predator movie, and the lack of any kind of game attention since Concrete Jungle, AvP is a welcome addition to the series. Yes, its not an A-List game by any stretch of the imagination, but it is still extremely fun for what it is.

It's deliriously gory, unwaveringly confident and spectacular fun. And, at the very least, it's far better than the dogsh.t films. [Apr 2010]

The controls for Predators and Xenomorphs may be a bit tricky and the AI sometimes doesn't show any "Intelligence" at all, but nevertheless: AvP is a most-have for fans of the movies, as well as the games - especially if you're into absolute multiplayer-mayhem and dont mind "some" gore.

Return of the iconic sci-fi shooter brings old ideas and methods in a new fashion and scores thanks to a great atmosphere and excellent controls. [Feb 2010]

Despite the years since the last installment, the formula continues to be fresh and witty.

10 years later, Rebellion brings back the Alien vs Predator saga. After the first gameplay hours where the atmosphere and sounds looks really good the tension vanish due to a lack of real difficulties. Endless bullet and checkpoint saving system makes the game too easy, removing from the player all the fear caused by an empty gun and horde of hungry aliens walking around you...If you are an Alien vs Predator's fan you'll still love this game but if you are not it's a normal fps with lot of problems and with no innovation.

Aliens Vs Predator is a standard First Person Shooter, but thanks to the Predator's and Xenomorph's campaigns, it entertains old and new players. Even the multiplayer mode is funny and well structured, but the graphics engine is not that good.

You won't be buying AvP for its single-player though, and if you are you may find yourself sorely disappointed. Rebellion has built AvP around its multiplayer, which is both well-constructed and surprisingly well-balanced.

Aliens vs Predator is a fanboys dream come true and works very well for the most part, though a bit of bug spray and polish could've pushed it through to the stratosphere. Recommended.

Aliens vs. Predator could have been a truly great game. It’s there, you can almost feel it, but it’s constantly ripped away from you because of some poor design decisions and a general lack of quality that keeps the game from having that triple-A feeling.

Rebellion removed the most important feature from the game: panic. Instead of being in danger or afraid all the time like in the classic game, it’s now easy to beat aliens to a pulp. It’s still thrilling from time to time, but the single-player-part has lost most of its appeal.

A good campaign, the marine one, and some variety in gameplay mechanics provide a quite fun experience. Unfortunately some ideas lack polish and the other two-thirds of the single player are just not as good as they were supposed to be.

Aliens Vs Predator is a great deal of fun, but there's no getting away from the fact that it feels somewhat dated and that the marine campaign is head and shoulders above the other two.

Rebellion had the right idea with AvP, but they just didn't fit all the pieces together properly.

I have to deal with what I have in my hands, and what I have is a single-player mode with some noticeable highlights and a multiplayer mode with too many problems to remain enjoyable, despite all its promise.

Great monsters and partly interesting multiplayer, but weak campaigns and clumsy controls reduce AvP's long-term appeal. [Apr 2010, p.94]

Aliens vs. Predator seems to be an ok game at the start, but in the end it disappoints a bit. The AI of the enemy is dreadful and the story is predictable.

The game has cutting edge visuals and Hollywood-level production values, but the gameplay isn’t anywherenear as powerful or compelling as you would think the franchise would allow for. A real shame.

This incarnation of AvP is a second-rate shooter in the most typical form, with overly repetitious game design, coding mistakes, threepenny visuals and dialogues scribbled on a rumpled napkin.

The franchise name (AvP) and spot on feel for it is the only thing that saves this game from pure mediocrity. The marine campaign was repetitive, but fun (PLEASE, please play this game on HARD or nightmare, its so much more fun this way otherwise its just run and gun super easy) The Alien campaign was alright, but youll be playing this one just for the gore as the AI really just ruins this campaign (they never, ever spot you on the ceiling or take note of their fallen comrades or take any kind of intuitive action resulting in a really easy campaign even on nightmare). Most people complain about the controls but If you are playing the PC version you will find them a whole lot better, but still kinda stiff (alien takes alot of getting used to). As for the Predator campaign, this is basically the same story as Alien, just not so easy and short. The aliens will be the only challenge here. Fortunately, its a little more interesting and story packed playing as the predator, not to mention that the trophy kills are cooler than the Alien's. Overall, its a disappoint game and only enjoyable if you like AvP.

Alien vs Predator is the worst game I have ever played…ever. This game is the electronic version of a cup of rancid feces thrown into your face. I played the old avp, I played avp 2, both were at best mediocre. However both were vastly better than this horrible game. You cant even crouch, you know, to take cover. This game is designed for the player to die as many times as possible in the smallest, blandest rooms possible. If you like NOT enjoying a game then this is the game for you!

Total waste of money .... this title is not worth its cost. single player is almost a replica of the first AVP movie and its quite short , gameplay wise... Although you get some moments of challange overall its just offers buffed up graphics.Nothing exiting or interesting made with the plot. Multiplayer is a total let down, no dedicated servers... since you get a message saying its only in beta.... And player servers constanly drop crash or leave games in the middle because some players dont like to lose or dont want to play marines.... and even if your lucky to start a game (after a very long loading time), you see you ping is above 170 since theres is no connection information on the lobby. All you have left is unplayable Multiplayer. And what do you get on a succesful Ranked match Xp, which opens up new skins.... its not a modeling contest its AVP..... it should have been something useful. Im really sorry I wasted my money on this.

It's an "ok" game. What is not so good: boring story, very bad animations compared to other new games (models act like 5 years ago), in general the game has no "wow" effect, if you played some other games in the last 3 years. I expected more athmosphear (the first AvP had a better "pressure" athmosphere), I expected better animations, I expected a real story and missions (it's "just go there to get off the planet"). Last point: the missions are totally static, you don't have secondary routes or possibilities (except as alien, you can use vents, wow, how impressing), so it has no surprises or nice ideas at all :(. Most players will think, it's "ok", but today a lot games show more unique ideas and better stories.

i only vote zero to help bring down the score to something more useful to anyone who considers buying it! i would give it a 4 for looking so damn pretty and then downed it to a 3 for the pretty cutscenes being buggy and crashing my computer after watching half of them! Looks is all this game has done well tho, probably (as someone said) using the AVP films as their main inspiration source. im a huge fan of the aliens and predator series and if you are a fan also who just hasnt bought this game yet...DONT! its just not worth it! i did not experience the overly dark screen problems some other gamers have had but i think i might darken my screen more to get some element of fear out of playing a marine! its just not scary! they have ruined it by having the aliens move so slow and giving them too much health, these aliens are morbidly obese im guessing!! less health more speed please! the combat in the avp 2 game was a total adrenaline rush! So very many awful choices have been made in this games creation! no crouching!? seriously!? predators can only use a powerfull jump by "focusing" to find glowing jump way points!...why restrict the players movement so much!? a marine holding his arms up will not stop a lunging aliens teeth and claws!! his arms would quickly be removed! so who thought that would be a good idea!? The marine campaign was supposed to be the best i heard but was very quickly ruined for me by the bad combat and lack of fear! also why does it take 3 head shoots to kill an alien on normal!? in the aliens film their head burst like ripened water melons on one or two shots!. i guess they had to do that as they had to give their extremely unfit, needs to go to the gym style aliens need some sort of advantage! predator campaign impressed me with the first little combat trial thing at the start, along with the hulking feel they gave to being a predator!predators and aliens stopping each others attacks i can understand but the marines should be very weak in that area! the enemy marine ai was obviously awful right from the start! also they broke the predator by giving him virtually no energy storage and no way to restore it without draining some marine tech, also gave him med kits......AVP2 had it better. and why has the amazing multi vision predator mask just turned in to thermal goggles?! where are the other visions?! AVP had 4 i was expecting more from this installment! I haven't even started the alien campaign as ive heard its the worst and may spare myself the dissapointment and just uninstall it. add to the awful game play choices the many errors and bugs many people have had, and it becomes questionable why they released this game in the state its in. So overall, i was expecting much more from this installment! It is a horrendous disappointment to realize i have waited so long for a new AVP game and this is what im presented with, combined with the thought that this sequel means there is no chance of a good version being released any time soon and i may have to wait another decade for something to beat AVP2, unless a mod that fixes the game is released.
Misc Hief gave it a6:
Haven't actually played much of the single player bit yet, or much of the multiplayer either. Mostly due to being too busy playing Mount&Blade :P Single player marine campaign seems creepy as hell so far, "threepenny visuals"? did you play it on an xbox or something? Looks quite good to me. There's one major bummer for me with this game though, and that is the lack of coop single player marine campaign.. WHY DO NOBODY MAKE GOOD COOP GAMES ANYMORE??? I am missing the good true PC titles, and kinda sick of all this "oh we have to make it available for the console market" crap Meh I'll go play some serious sam HD with friends, yes it's got ancient mechanics (and visuals) compared to lot of popular shooters, but it delivers a few things all these major new titles can't, cause they are made for a consumerist market that are more concerned with graphics and hype than good gameplay (read: modern warfare 2... No it's not a terrible game, it has fun sides, when it works right, but it's just unimaginative, broken and hyped up) Anyway I am digressing, if this new AvP title had coop campaign I would give it about 2000 out of 10, but it doesn't so it's kind of a letdown right now, still haven't tried survivor mode with friends though, might be good fun. Design and graphics etc though, seriously what are you complaining about? It does good justice to the atmosphere fans of the series would expect.
John gave it a7:
I really want to like this game, but I find it hard. As far as level design goes, there is a line between making the different campaigns memorable, and just being plan out lazy and using the same levels for everyone, and that is what they did here. I disagree with anyone saying the visuals suck, because they are probably not playing it on a high-end PC and getting to enjoy the game like it was meant to be. So shame on the critics who tried to properly review this on 360. As far as multiplayer goes, I am more upset about balance issues than I am with overall gameplay. I believe most of the game types are very solid and work well for the game. Matchmaking was a joke at first and anyone who goes with Player-Hosting these days is just plain out stupid. But most of these matchmaking problems were addressed in a patch, so good. Other than that, I really want to like this game, but I finding it very hard to hang on to the idea of wanting to. It feels as though I am torturing myself by playing it, like I am diving into this pool of warm piss to get bars of gold at the bottom. The gold is the good parts of the game were as the piss is the bad parts. I'm sorry Rebellion, but you guys let this chick out from under you wing to early, and failed to fly off the tree branch.
