Summary
Band Hero delivers an explosive social gameplay experience for Nintendo DS Lite with the addition of vocals and drums via an innovative new Drum Grip to the guitar and bass gameplay popularized by the Guitar Hero On Tour trilogy. Band Hero allows handheld gamers to choose the way they want to play in multiplayer mode with any instrument combination of guitar, bass, drums and vocals as they strum, drum and belt out some of today's most popular tracks across multiple genres of music, including rock, pop, alternative and punk. With the largest and most diverse set list in a Nintendo DS Lite offering to-date, Band Hero offers fans 30 master recordings from today’s top artists including: Blink-182, Avril Lavigne, The Killers, KT Tunstall, and Fall Out Boy. With new features players can enjoy anytime, anywhere, a brand new Rockstar Editor to fully customize your band members, No Fail mode and Stage Stunts, Band Hero changes the way games can be played on the road. Game Chronicles
The music selection is great and the four person multiplayer is the real highlight.

Regardless of whether or not the setlist is everybody’s cup of tea, Band Hero’s many additions and mechanical enhancements easily make it the most solid of the franchise’s handheld iterations.

Band Hero takes the musical genre one step further, and demonstrates its viability on handheld platforms. It might be some time before it replaces the console versions, however. A better guitar, and a more serious dedication to rewarding gameplay would really draw the crowds.

Band Hero for DS is a fun portable music game, but contains enough head-scratching design elements to be frustrating.

Band Hero is fun and has a bunch of good tunes if you like junk food music like I do, but this is the same experience you’ve been getting out of the Guitar Hero On Tour franchise.

Band Hero is a solid addition to the portable series, but as they continue to segregate the franchises the audiences will continue to dwindle.

Band Hero DS is a nice addition to any music lover's library of games.

Band Hero works well enough on the DS. The core gameplay is good, and the song list is diverse enough that you can play this for a good amount of time before becoming bored.

While Band Hero isn't perfect, it does offer more than just painful, hand-cramping guitar mechanics. This time around you can drum and sing, two modes that prove to be a lot of fun on the go.

In the end, I guess I’ll just say that if you’re really desperate to take your music games everywhere with you, the setlist turns your crank, and you find the Guitar Grip and Drum Overlay comfortable, then add 15 points to my score because Band Hero isn’t a terrible option. If you don’t require portability, however, I’d stick with the console versions.

Overall, Band Hero on the DS is a step in the wrong direction for portable music games. They've tried to go big on the peripheral front, but in doing so they've excluded a huge chunk of gamers in a wide range of ages.

Even though Band Hero is still a strong musical performer, its problems keep it from stealing the show.

When it comes to bringing the full complement of instruments to the DS, Band Hero represents a very rocky start. If it weren't for the game's shortsighted and unintuitive peripherals, there might actually be something worthwhile here -- assuming you dig the soundtrack, anyhow.

The main Play mode and multiplayer are lots of fun, but there are no other modes - unless, of course, you count Fan Requests, but you can only access them by connecting to a copy of Band Hero Wii.

Yet another effort to make music games portable fails to make the charts.
Read Full Review >Games Radar (in-house)
The gameplay is still fun if you’re willing to suffer through painful hand cramping from playing guitar and bass, severely wounded vocal registry, and a general lack of precision provided by the Drum Grip. Oh wait, that doesn’t sound so fun. The peripherals do more to kill the experience than enhance it, which totally defeats the purpose of this pricey package.

As for the game itself, I like to call it "Band Hero: Abridged." The set list is varied, fun and up to date, with tunes from Avril Lavigne to The Rolling Stones. However, without a career mode, you have access to all 30 songs from the start.

Nicholas B. gave it a4:
The guitar and bass sections work as well as previous games did, but the vocals are a little patchy and still don't detect pitch properly, and the drums are pointless on a handheld system. The charts for the drums range from good to stupid, and some sections are very difficult to play with the grip or buttons. Sections with long repeated notes on the drums are impossible to play on the grip, and the developers should have realized this.
